Lauren, soul behind Ochre Ceramics
Lauren. Lauren is the designer and creator behind Ochre Ceramics : a gorgeous jewellery collection. Transitioning from an Interior Design degree, where she immersed herself in studios in both ceramics and silversmithing. Now surrendering to her true passion in the art of ceramic sculpture and jewellery, she works to collaborate both mediums while taking inspiration from the nature around her.
As a very talented and creative woman, she offers original pieces that combine elegance, purity and engagement. Her intention to promote an authentic and ethical way of living inspires me so much as I appreciate to add some gorgeous jewellery to my wardrobe while respecting our mother earth. Ochre, her wonderful brand, asks you to take the time to appreciate the subtle and unique details in its jewellery.

1. What drives you ?
I get so much happiness being creative. Being able to indulge in the craft of making everyday. I would also say sharing my creations with others. It can be a very vulnerable feeling putting what you poured so much of yourself into out into the world. However it’s the purest high when someone truly loves and connects with it.
J’aime tellement être créative. Chaque jour, être capable de me plonger avec bonheur dans la fabrication. Je dirais aussi de partager mes créations avec les autres. Nous pouvons nous sentir très vulnérables en exposant au monde ce qui reflète tant de nous-même. Ceci dit, c’est la plus pure marque de reconnaissance que de voir une personne aimer véritablement votre œuvre
2. What inspired you to start your business ?
I didn’t really set out to start Ochre. To be honest if someone had told me to start a jewellery business I probably would have laughed. However Ochre has been a very organic journey, truly I have just been putting one foot in front of the other. I started making jewellery for friends and could see how much they loved what I’d made. It gave me so much happiness seeing them wearing their jewels ! So I did a market, and then another one and then another.... and it’s still is just floating along like this.
Je ne me suis pas réellement préparer à lancer Ochre. Pour être honnête, si quelqu’un m’avait proposé d’entreprendre une activité de joaillerie, j’aurais certainement ri. Pourtant, l’aventure d’Ochre s’est fait tout naturellement, j’ai vraiment mis un pied après l’autre. J’ai commencé à faire des bijoux pour des ami-e-s et ai pu constater ô combien ils/elles aimaient ce que j’avais fait. Cela m’a rendu tellement heureuse de les voir porter mes bijoux ! Alors, j’en ai vendu sur un marché, puis un autre et encore un autre… et tout continue dans cette lancée.
3. How do your creations help you to connect with Life and the elements ?
I love this question, I think Ochre has taught me how to better connect! It has shown me more than ever that I have the power to make sure every decision I make has a positive consequence on our earth, and all its creatures. This is so important to me as the all the materials I use to make my jewellery for Ochre... clay, silver, brass come from our beautiful earth.
J’aime cette question et crois que Ochre m’a appris à me connecter davantage ! Cette aventure m’a montré plus que jamais que j’ai le pouvoir de m’assurer que chaque décision que je prends a un impact positif sur notre planète et le vivant. C’est tellement important pour moi que tous les matériaux que j’utilise pour fabriquer mes bijoux viennent de la Terre Mère : de l’argile, de l’argent et du cuivre.
4. When did you allow your creativity to grow ?
I have always been creative. I use to make the most elaborate LEGO worlds with my brothers when I was little. I think for me it is more about a shift in being creative for someone else and believing in myself and being creative for me.
Je suis créative depuis toujours. Je m’amusais à concevoir les constructions en LEGO les plus élaborées avec mes frères lorsque j’étais enfant. Je pense que dans mon cas, mon évolution a plus été de passer de créer pour les autres à réellement croire en moi et être créative pour moi-même.
5. Do you consider your creations as an outflow, a meditation maybe ?
Sometimes it is pure meditation I can get so lost in what I am doing. However other times it’s a little stressful ; I tend to like to say ‘yes’ to everything. However the feeling of getting it all done is always worth it and brings me so much happiness.
Parfois c’est une véritable méditation, je peux me perdre totalement dans ce que je fais. Pour autant, d’autres fois c’est un peu stressant car j’ai tendance à vouloir dire ‘oui’ à tout. Ceci dit, le sentiment de satisfaction après avoir tout terminé en vaut toujours la peine et me rend profondément heureuse.
6. As an ethical entrepreneur, are you aware of your own power to embody your values ?
My values are always growing and shifting as my knowledge about business and about sustainable and ethical practices create deeper roots. I am always learning, I love listening to podcast, talking with others in a both similar and different lines of business. I think the power is in knowledge when trying to embody an ethical way of working.
Mes valeurs évoluent continuellement puisque ma connaissance du monde des affaires et mon inscription quotidienne dans un mode de vie éthique et responsable m’enracinent toujours davantage. J’apprends tous les jours. J’aime écouter des podcasts, parler avec les autres sur des points de vue divers et variés. Je pense que pour incarner un mode de travail éthique, il est primordial de se renseigner.
7. What do you want to create for the future ?
Honestly the exciting thing is I truly have no idea what the future holds for Ochre. 18 months ago Ochre was only a dream.
I guess what I want for the future is to continue to create, to be inspired, collaborate with others, find balance and happiness in work and life, and to always feel proud of what I put out into the world knowing it is created without any harm to our beautiful planet.
Honnêtement, ce qui est excitant c’est que je n’ai aucune idée de ce que l’avenir de Ochre sera. 18 mois plus tôt, Ochre n’était encore qu’un rêve !
Je suppose que ce que je souhaite c’est de continuer à créer, à m’inspirer et à collaborer avec les autres. Trouver mon équilibre et épanouissement dans le travail comme dans la vie ; et surtout, de toujours me sentir fière de ce que je partage avec le monde dans la mesure où chaque création respecte notre planète.
8. A self-care routine ?
YOGA! I do yoga for both my mind and for my body. Sometimes it’s the only time I take to just breath, and notice how I’m feeling. I think I struggle to switch off, especially as I feel so passionate about Ochre and constantly have a new idea in the works. I am learning that sometimes you just need to ‘stop’ and connect with your breath. And it’s hard!
Also good food, I’m a big foody! I always feel like a can tackle that long list of jobs after a big bowl of homemade granola. Also sometimes when it all feels a bit overwhelming, I make banana bread! Ha
Du Yoga ! Je pratique le yoga autant pour mon esprit que pour mon corps. Parfois, c’est le seul moment où je respire vraiment et porte une attention à mes ressentis. Je pense que j’ai du mal à arrêter, surtout parce que je suis tellement passionnée par Ochre et ai constamment de nouvelles idées. J’apprends que parfois nous avons juste besoin de s’arrêter un instant et nous connecter avec notre respiration. Et c’est dur !
La bonne nourriture aussi, dont je suis une grande friande ! J’ai toujours la sensation que je peux m’attaquer à cette longue liste de choses à faire après un bol de granola maison. Aussi, lorsque je me sens submergée par les évènements, je fais un banana bread ! Ah !
9. A favorite book ?
I’m currently sitting at the airport in Lombok with ‘The woman in the window’ by A.J Finn in my lap. I am only half way through but I am HOOKED!
A cet instant précis, je suis assise dans l’aéroport de Lombok avec le livre « La femme à la fenêtre » de A.J Finn. Je n’en suis qu’à la moitié mais déjà accro !
10. What does authenticity means to you ?
I have been thinking about this a lot lately. I think it’s tricky these days to not create something without being inspired by something else. This may even be consciously or unconsciously. However I believe you know when you have organically designed, created, crafted something, and when you have blatantly copied someone else.
We are all inspired by others, by nature, by our individual journeys... and that’s the most beautiful thing. However it’s important to alway take an idea further, rework it so it’s your own. For me authenticity in my own work comes from my love, knowledge and growth in the materials I am working with, and the creative journey I am on as I explore them.
C’est une définition à laquelle j’ai beaucoup réfléchi ces derniers temps. Je pense qu’il est difficile aujourd’hui de créer sans être inspirée par autre chose – et ce de manière consciente ou inconsciente. Pour autant, je crois que nous sentons lorsque nous concevons, dessinons ou construisons quelque chose de personnel et lorsque c’est totalement copié.
Nous nous inspirons tous-tes mutuellement, par la nature aussi et par nos parcours personnels… et c’est ça le plus beau ! Malgré tout, c’est important de toujours d’aller plus loin dans notre idée pour la bâtir à notre image. Pour moi, l’authenticité dans mon travail vient de mon amour, ma connaissance et ma croissance dans la manière d’utiliser les matériaux qui me permettent d’évoluer dans ma carrière créative.
